Welcome Bill Colligen: Mixed Media Gourd Sculpture
My pieces are a union of art and nature with Zen and Asian influences. The
finishes I grace these pieces with are a variety of metallic/verdigris patinas.
The only paint involved are the multi-colored dots and the black outlines. My
designs are all pyro-engraved into the gourd shell and some are relief carved
with a textured, dyed background.
I use many different metal leaf applications
including composition, copper, chemically enhanced, hand colored and 22 ct.
gold. I inlay gem stones and some areas I call 'faux burlwood' inlay which is
actually a dye application directly on to the gourd surface. I use reed, bamboo
and a variety of metal and stone handles on the lids.
I discovered the gourd's potential as a unique canvas for my creative vision a
decade ago beginning with simple tribal and ethnic images using minimum color
and evolving into my present meticulous detailing with a myriad of color.
My intent is to create an experience
which impacts the collector with a sense of tranquility, beauty and balance.
I spent many years in the landscape design and installation field specializing
in small Zen/Japanese gardens in Northern California. I felt that there was more
that I desired to share with people as far as my creative potential within. I
felt the need to express something deep within on a more personal level. Where
this comes from I do not know but I am flowing with it and gain more inspiration
with every piece I create.
